Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of meibomian gland excreta on cataract surgery.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. 60 cataract patients with dry eye patients were treated with meibomian gland massage, and the meibomian gland secretions were collected for bacterial culture, fungal culture and antibiotic drug sensitivity test.

Results: Among the 60 eyes for bacterial culture, there were 48 positive results (80%), in which 46 were Gram-positive and 2 Gram-negative. The amount of positive results for fungal culture was 3(5%). The average diameter (millimeter) of bacteriostatic ring for levofloxacin, tobramycin, tetracycline, erythrocin and rifampicin were 20.8, 16.9, 14.2, 10.9 and 28.4, respectively. The diameter of bacteriostatic ring of these drugs was statistically significant (p<0.05). The age between patient with positive results and negative results in bacterial culture was not statistically significant (p=0.069). The result of bacterial culture has no significant relationship with age and gender (p>0.05).

Conclusions: There is microorganism growth in meibomian glands of some cataract patients combined with meibomian gland dysfunction and it has chance to contaminate the surgical incision. We consider that the intraocular surgery incision as type II incision. The orifice of meibomian gland should be completely wrapped to have a better prevention of postoperative infection.
