One virtue of a digital online journal such as Journal of Vision is that articles can be published as soon as ready, avoiding the delay incurred by waiting until an issue is complete. Special issues disrupt this simple and efficient flow, because while special issue articles must be published contiguously, they are unlikely to be ready as a contiguous sequence.
To meet this challenge, and to minimize the delays in publication of articles in both regular and special issues, with this special issue we inaugurate a new scheme of parallel publication. Special issues will be published in parallel with regular issues. This special issue on Finding visual features: Using stochastic stimuli to discover internal representations is published as issue 4, while regular articles will continue to be published in issues 2, 3, and 5. When all articles have been published, the special issue will be closed. The pagination within the special issue will occupy a block allocated for that purpose. Authors will now have the benefit of having their paper published as soon as production is complete.
Parallel publication is yet another advantage of an online journal. As always, we welcome comments and suggestions on this new innovation at the Journal of Vision. We encourage readers who have not already done so to sign up for alerts at
http://www.journalofvision.org/info/subscribe.aspx. This will insure that you receive immediate notification whenever a new article is published.
