The pendulum was “hanging” above a set of eight geometrical objects that appeared to be 3D and placed on the room floor. They were rendered to have the following reflectance and luminance values, as shown in
Figure 1A, from left to right:
cylinder, mean luminance = 5.8 cd/m
2, median = 5.34 cd/m
2, range = [0.07 13.8] cd/m
2, reflectance = 75%;
sphere, mean luminance = 10 cd/m
2, median = 7.46 cd/m
2, range = [0.51 29.25] cd/m
2, reflectance = 100%;
cone, mean luminance = 9.52 cd/m
2, median = 10.14 cd/m
2, range = [0.95 18.39] cd/m
2, reflectance 50%;
sphere, mean luminance = 1.21 cd/m
2, median = 0.86 cd/m
2, range = [0.1 3.75] cd/m
2, reflectance = 10%;
cube, mean luminance = 9.1 cd/m
2, median = 4.33 cd/m
2, range = [3.78 16.86] cd/m
2, reflectance = 75%);
sphere, mean luminance = 11.28 cd/m
2, median = 10.28 cd/m
2, range = [0.92 26.79] cd/m
2, reflectance = 60%;
cube, mean luminance = 4.41 cd/m
2, median = 3.08 cd/m
2, range = [0.96 18.39] cd/m
2, reflectance = 70%; and
sphere, mean luminance = 3.04 cd/m
2, median = 2.88 cd/m
2, range = [0.3 6.7] cd/m
2, reflectance = 30%. The walls were rendered to have a 10% reflectance (mean luminance = 2.85 cd/m
2, median = 1.95 cd/m
2, range = [0.01 27.8] cd/m
2). The light source responsible for the gradient was placed at the top left of the center of the scene and was not visible from the observer's point of view. Another light source was placed far behind the observer's point of view to ensure a certain level of ambient illumination.
