Abstract

The incidence of dry eye syndrome is increasing not only in middle-aged and elderly people, but also in adolescents. In order to prevent this, it is important to reduce the use time of digital devices, blink frequently, and properly maintain the surrounding humidity, but it is difficult to practice. Therefore, in this study, we tried to find out if there is a preventive effect on dry eye through simple dry eye preventive eye exercises using an application. A total of 30 eyes (male: 6, female: 9, average age: 23.2 ± 2.69 years old), were studied. For the measurement of tear film breakup time, a non-invasive tear film breakup time (NITBUT) test method was used. The initial and average NITBUT were measured before and after using the application. Intraocular pressure, low- and high-order aberrations were measured before and after the test subject used the application. The eye exercise training application used for the dry eye training included Palming, Wave move, Blinking, Closing tight, and Closes eye move. The initial NITBUT was 4.99 ± 0.88 sec before eye exercise training and increased to 5.72 ± 1.41 sec after eye exercise training, indicating a statistically significant increase in NITBUT first break time after eye exercise training (p<0.050). The average NITBUT was 7.50 ± 1.84 sec before eye exercise training and increased to 8.82 ± 2.25 sec after eye exercise training, indicating a statistically significant increase (p<0.050). However, aberrations and intraocular pressure tended to decrease after training, but were not statistically significant. Both the initial and the average NITBUT tended to increase. In addition, intraocular pressure and low- and high-order aberrations tended to decrease after exercise. Therefore, it was found that eye exercise using the application has some effects of preventing dry eye syndrome.
