Measurements of the Effect of Surface Slant on Perceived Lightness

This site contains supplementary material for the paper Ripamonti et al, Measurements of the Effect of Surface Slant on Perceived Lightness.

Stimuli

Palette reflectances.

Standard object luminances and chromaticities, Exps. 1 and 2.

Standard object luminances and chromaticities, Exp 3.

Raw Lightness Matching Data, Experiment 1

Each of the files below contains the raw lightness matching data for one subject in Experiment 1. Files are in tab delimited text format.

Column 1: contains the 8 standard reflectances;
Columns 2-4 contain observer's matches (reflectance values) for -45 deg slant, one replication per column;
Columns 5-7 contain observer's matches for 0 deg slant;
Columns 8-10 contain observer's matches for 30 deg slant;
Columns 11-13 contain observer's matches for 45 deg slant;
Columns 14-16 contain observer's matches for 60 deg slant.

Trials where observer was unable to find a satisfactory match were entered in the data as either the highest or lowest available palette reflectance. The data files do not distinguish between this case and when the observer was satisfied with a match at either the highest or lowest available reflectance. We excluded all such trials from our quantitative analyses.

Raw Lightness Matching Data, Experiment 2

Same format as Experiment 1 data.

HWC, IBO, JPL, KIR, LEF, MRG, NMR

Raw Lightness Matching Data, Experiment 3

Each of the files below contains the raw lightness matching data for one subject in Experiment 3. Files are in tab delimited text format.

Column 1: contains the 5 standard reflectances;
Columns 2-4 contain observer's matches (reflectance values) for -60 deg slant, one replication per column;
Columns 5-7 contain observer's matches for -45 deg slant;
Columns 8-10 contain observer's matches for -30 deg slant;
Columns 11-13 contain observer's matches for -15 deg slant;
Columns 14-16 contain observer's matches for 0 deg slant.
Columns 17-19 contain observer's matches for 15 deg slant.
Columns 20-22 contain observer's matches for 30 deg slant.
Columns 23-25 contain observer's matches for 45 deg slant.
Columns 26-28 contain observer's matches for 60 deg slant.

Trials where observer was unable to find a satisfactory match were entered in the data as either the highest or lowest available palette reflectance. The data files do not distinguish between this case and when the observer was satisfied with a match at either the highest or lowest available reflectance. We excluded all such trials from our quantitative analyses.

Raw Slant Matching Data, Experiment 3

Each of the files below contains raw slant matching data for one subject in Experiment 3. Files are in tab delimited text format.

Column 1: contains the slant of the standard being matched;
Columns 2-4 contain observer's matches for standard reflectance 0.186;
Columns 2-4 contain observer's matches for standard reflectance 0.114.

On a small number of trials the observer made an error and accepted a match before he or she meant to, then indicated this error verbally before the next trial. Such trials are indicated in the files by a value of 999.
